16 teams. 40 games. 4 venues. And it all boils down to this. Hello and welcome to the final of the inaugural edition of the Under 19 Womens T20 World Cup. Though you might be familiar with some of the names from both teams, the final is all about handling the pressure situations and holding your nerve during crunch moments. England, the only unbeaten side of the tournament so far, will be up against India, who claimed a convincing 8-wicket win over New Zealand in the semis. Cricket Australia have just posted a wonderful content on their social media platforms featuring Ellyse Perry and Fatima Sana. In case you're wondering what context it offers to the current game - It's all about learning from each other and trying to get better as these U 19 girls aim to play world tournaments and several others competitive leagues all across the globe.
Batters to look forward to? India's opener Shweta Sehrawat is the leading run-scorer of the tournament, (292 runs from 6 games) averaging 146 with an impressive strike-rate of 141.06 while at it. England skipper Grace Scrivens isn't too far behind. The 19 year-old left-hander has 289 runs from 6 games with a healthy strike-rate of 134.42. Shweta's opening partner Shafali Verma and Scriven's opening partner Liberty Heap are also among the top 8 run-getters of the tournament. Clear indication that a lot depends on opening duo of both sides today....
Bowlers to look forward to? Leg spinners from both sides, Hannah Baker and Parashavi Chopra are both tied on wickets column (taken 9 each so far) and are placed third and fourth respectively in the leading wicket-takers list. While Parshavi Chopra picked up a four-fer against Sri Lanka, Baker has a best of 3/9 against Ireland. Both have come in the Super Six stage of the competition. Can one of them end up with a 4-fer/5-fer today and end up as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament? We shall see...
How is the weather? There is a slight chance of drizzle around 16:00 local, but nothing threatening on the radar that suggests a long-ish delay. Fingers crossed for an uninterrupted game of cricket.
How is the surface? The surface at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom has been good for batting, but it seemed to have slowed down a bit in the latter half of the tournament. While New Zealand managed 107 batting first in the 1st semi-final, England were bowled out for 99 in the second semi-final. If those recent stats are anything to go by, spinners might have a crucial role to play here.
England's skipper in the house: Heather Knight and the rest of the English girls (senior team) have flown down to Potchefstroom to watch and support their juniors. Lydia Greenway, on air, says that Heather texted her this morning and expressed her excitement to come and watch the final. It's a four-hour round trip from where the England team have been preparing for the mega tournament, she adds.
Did you know? Grace Scrivens, the England skipper, has won every toss of the tournament so far, but not today.
